Overview

Ferrules are critical sealing components in HPLC fittings, ensuring precise, leak‑free, high‑pressure connections.

Stainless‑steel ferrules and stainless‑steel/PEEK hybrid ferrules (often called high‑performance ferrules) are both used in chromatography, but they differ significantly in pressure capability, reusability, and suitable applications.

Stainless‑Steel Ferrules

Primary Characteristics

  • Designed for maximum pressure performance, supporting >15,000 psi.
  • Provide an extremely strong, permanent mechanical swage onto tubing.
  • Deliver the most rigid and reliable seal under UHPLC‑level pressures.

Best Use Cases

  • Permanent connections, such as fittings that will not be routinely disconnected—e.g., column inlet/outlet lines in stable setups.
  • Applications requiring the highest pressure the system can withstand.

Limitations

  • Not reusable—once swaged, the ferrule is permanently attached to the tubing.
  • Risk of damaging the port if overtightened.
  • Not recommended when frequent disassembly is required.

Stainless‑Steel / PEEK Hybrid Ferrules (High‑Performance Ferrules)

Primary Characteristics

  • Made from a hybrid design combining a stainless‑steel core with a PEEK sealing interface.
  • Provide high pressure performance up to ~15,000 psi when used with multi‑cone fittings, and up to 10,000 psi with a single‑cone HPLC nut.
  • Designed to avoid permanent swaging onto tubing.

Best Use Cases

  • Connections that need to be broken and remade periodically, such as frequent column changes.
  • Situations requiring high performance but with more operator flexibility than full stainless‑steel ferrules provide.

Reusability

  • Can be reused a limited number of times—as long as they are not overtightened and are used with stainless‑steel tubing.

Advantages

  • Reduced risk of seizing or permanently locking onto tubing.
  • Provide a high‑pressure seal with more convenience than pure stainless‑steel ferrules.
