What Is the Window Maker™ Designed For?

The MICROSOLV Window Maker™ was developed specifically to remove a narrow section of polyimide coating from fused silica capillaries used in capillary electrophoresis.

The standard application is:

  • Fused silica tubing
  • 365 µm outer diameter (OD)
  • Inner diameters of:
    • 25 µm
    • 50 µm
    • 75 µm
    • 100 µm
    • 125 µm

The device creates clean detection windows for CE applications without damaging the fused silica capillary.

Can It Be Used on Glass Fibers or Wires?

MICROSOLV has not evaluated the Window Maker® for use with:

  • Solid-core glass fibers
  • Optical fibers
  • Metal wires
  • Specialty coated wires
  • Other coated materials outside standard CE capillaries

Because these materials differ in composition, coating thickness, thermal properties, and construction, performance cannot be predicted or guaranteed.

Have Some Users Tried Alternative Applications?

Yes.

Some users have reported success removing polyimide coatings from certain glass fibers and specialty wire products. However, others have reported inconsistent results.

Performance may vary based on:

  • Material composition
  • Coating thickness
  • Coating chemistry
  • Diameter of the substrate
  • Thermal conductivity

Because these applications have not been validated, results cannot be guaranteed.

Important Support and Warranty Considerations

Use of the Window Maker® outside its intended capillary electrophoresis application is considered an unsupported use.

As a result:

  • Performance is not guaranteed.
  • Application support is not available for non-CE uses.
  • The product would not be considered defective if it fails to perform adequately on unsupported materials.
  • Returns based on unsupported applications may not be accepted.

Users considering alternative applications should conduct their own testing and validation prior to adopting the process.

Key Takeaways

  • The Window Maker® is designed specifically for fused silica CE capillaries.
  • Standard applications include 365 µm OD capillaries with 25-125 µm IDs.
  • Performance on wires, optical fibers, or other coated materials has not been validated by MICROSOLV.
  • Some users have reported success with alternative materials, but results vary.
  • Unsupported applications are not covered by product performance guarantees.
