🧠 Background: What Are TSE and BSE?

  • TSE (Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies) are a group of rare, progressive, and fatal brain diseases caused by prions—misfolded proteins that can induce abnormal folding in other proteins.
  • BSE, commonly known as “mad cow disease,” is a form of TSE that affects cattle.
  • Other forms include:
    • Scrapie in sheep
    • Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD) in humans

These diseases are of particular concern in pharmaceutical, biotech, and analytical industries due to the potential for cross-contamination and regulatory scrutiny.
