Overview
Di-Ad™ Direct Adaptive HPLC Connectors are designed to provide universal compatibility with standard 1/16-inch tubing and 10-32 chromatography ports. Proper ferrule maintenance is important for preserving leak-free connections, minimizing dead volume, and maintaining chromatographic performance.
Over time, repeated tubing insertions can cause ferrule wear. Replacing worn ferrules helps ensure consistent sealing and reliable operation.
When to Replace a Ferrule
Ferrules should be inspected periodically and replaced when:
- Excessive wear is visible
- Sealing performance declines
- Connection reliability is reduced
- Approximately 50 tubing insertions have been completed
Replacement intervals may vary depending on operating conditions and frequency of use.
Ferrule Removal Procedure
Step 1
Locate the groove in the installed ferrule.
Step 2
Using a pair of wire cutters or similar hand tool, gently grasp the ferrule at the groove.
Step 3
Apply only enough pressure to grip the ferrule without excessively deforming it.
Step 4
Carefully pull the ferrule from the threaded stem.
If necessary, use a gentle back-and-forth motion while pulling to assist removal.
Ferrule Installation Procedure
Step 1
Insert a new ferrule into the threaded stem of the connector.
Step 2
Thread the connector into a column port or compatible fitting.
Step 3
Tighten the connector sufficiently to properly seat the new ferrule.
The ferrule will automatically align as the connector is installed.
Benefits of Proper Ferrule Maintenance
Routine ferrule replacement helps:
- Maintain low-dead-volume connections
- Support leak-free operation
- Improve tubing alignment
- Reduce connection-related band broadening
- Preserve chromatographic efficiency
Properly maintained fittings are especially important at critical connections such as injector-to-column and column-to-detector interfaces.
