Overview

The Cogent™ Diol™ column is based on TYPE-C™ silica hydride technology and incorporates a diol ligand that is chemically attached to the silica hydride surface. The structure of this ligand and the nature of its attachment contribute significantly to the chromatographic selectivity of the stationary phase.

Unlike traditional silica-based columns that rely on silanol-rich surfaces, the TYPE-C™ silica hydride platform provides a fundamentally different surface chemistry that supports multiple retention mechanisms.

Diol Ligand Attachment

The Cogent™ Diol™ stationary phase contains a diol ligand attached directly to the silica hydride surface through a:

Direct Silicon-Carbon (Si-C) Bond

This attachment chemistry is an important feature of the stationary phase and contributes to the stability and performance characteristics of the column.  The diol ligand becomes an integral part of the stationary phase surface, influencing how analytes interact with the column during chromatographic separations.

Role of the Diol Ligand

The diol ligand introduces polar functionality to the TYPE-C™ silica hydride surface.

As a result, the column can provide:

  • Polar selectivity
  • Hydrogen-bonding interactions
  • Unique analyte recognition characteristics
  • Alternative selectivity compared to hydrophobic stationary phases

This makes the column useful for compounds that may not be optimally separated on traditional reversed phase materials.

Chromatographic Applications

Because the diol ligand is attached to a silica hydride surface, the column can be used under a variety of chromatographic conditions.

These may include:

HILIC Methods

The column can provide retention for many polar compounds when operated with high-organic mobile phases typical of HILIC separations.

Reversed Phase Methods

The stationary phase can also be used under aqueous-organic conditions commonly associated with reversed phase chromatography.

Alternative Selectivity Applications

The combination of the diol ligand and silica hydride support often provides selectivity that differs from:

  • C18 columns
  • C8 columns
  • Phenyl columns
  • Conventional silica-based diol phases

This can make the column useful during method development when additional selectivity is needed.

Benefits of the TYPE-C™ Silica Hydride Platform

The diol ligand is attached to the underlying TYPE-C™ silica hydride surface, which contributes additional chromatographic characteristics including:

  • HILIC compatibility
  • Reversed phase flexibility
  • LC-MS compatibility
  • Unique polar compound retention
  • Broad method-development options

This combination of ligand chemistry and silica hydride support distinguishes the Cogent™ Diol™ column from many conventional stationary phases.
