Introduction

Holmium oxide is one of the most widely recognized wavelength accuracy standards used in UV-Visible spectroscopy. Its well-defined absorbance peaks across a broad wavelength range make it an excellent reference material for instrument qualification, calibration verification, and routine performance testing.

Although Holmium Oxide Solution is included in MICROSOLV qualification kits, it is also available separately for laboratories that require only wavelength accuracy testing or need a replacement solution for an existing kit.

Available as a Standalone Product

Holmium Oxide Solution may be purchased independently and does not require the purchase of a complete HSQ™ Qualification Kit.

This flexibility is useful for laboratories that:

  • Only need wavelength accuracy verification
  • Require replacement reference materials
  • Conduct routine UV-Visible performance checks
  • Maintain ongoing qualification programs

Product Options

Primary Use

Holmium Oxide Solution is used to verify:

  • Wavelength accuracy
  • Instrument calibration performance
  • UV-Visible spectrophotometer operation
  • Qualification compliance requirements

The solution contains multiple certified absorbance bands that can be used to compare measured wavelengths against certified reference values.

Certified Wavelength Range

Holmium Oxide Solution provides reference peaks spanning:  241 nm to 641 nm.  These certified spectral bands allow laboratories to evaluate instrument wavelength accuracy across a broad portion of the UV and visible spectrum.  Users may evaluate:

  • A single wavelength band
  • Multiple wavelength bands
  • All available certified bands

depending on internal procedures and qualification requirements.

Note that the HOX Solution will reflect different wavelengths with different light.

MICROSOLV Holmium Oxide Solution supplied as a standalone wavelength accuracy standard or replacement qualification kit component.

Certificate of Analysis

Each solution is accompanied by a Certificate of Analysis that contains:

  • Certified wavelength values
  • Applicable reference information
  • Quality documentation

Measured instrument results can be compared directly against the certified values provided with the solution.

Qualification Software Considerations

The standalone Holmium Oxide Solution does not include the Excel qualification template supplied with certain qualification kits.  However, the spreadsheet is not required for wavelength accuracy testing.  Qualification can be performed by:

  1. Measuring the wavelength positions of the holmium oxide spectral bands.
  2. Comparing the measured values to the certified values listed on the Certificate of Analysis.
  3. Confirming that results meet the laboratory's acceptance criteria.

Appearance of the Solution

The appearance of Holmium Oxide Solution may vary slightly when observed under different lighting conditions.  Variations in apparent color are related to:

  • Ambient lighting
  • Viewing angle
  • Background conditions

and do not necessarily indicate changes in product quality or suitability for use.

Applications

Holmium Oxide Solution is commonly used for:

  • UV-Visible wavelength accuracy verification
  • Spectrophotometer qualification
  • Performance qualification programs
  • Routine instrument checks
  • Calibration verification
  • Regulatory compliance activities

Conclusion

Holmium Oxide Solution is available both as a standalone wavelength accuracy standard and as a replacement component for qualification and calibration kits. With certified spectral bands spanning 241 nm to 641 nm, the solution provides a convenient and reliable tool for verifying UV-Visible instrument wavelength accuracy without requiring the purchase of a complete qualification kit.
