Can a Hydrophobic PTFE Membrane Be Used with Aqueous Samples?

Yes, but only after the membrane has been properly wetted.

Hydrophobic PTFE membranes naturally repel water, which means aqueous solutions may:

  • Pass through very slowly
  • Require excessive filtration pressure
  • Fail to pass through the membrane entirely

Pre-wetting the membrane with methanol can improve the membrane's ability to pass aqueous solutions.


How to Wet a PTFE Syringe Filter for Aqueous Filtration

For a standard 25 mm PTFE syringe filter:

  1. Filter approximately 15 to 20 mL of methanol through the filter.
  2. Discard the methanol filtrate.
  3. Immediately begin filtering the aqueous sample.

The methanol wets the membrane surface and reduces the resistance that water encounters when passing through the filter.
