Introduction

Accurate performance verification of UV-Visible spectrophotometers is essential for ensuring reliable analytical results. Routine qualification helps confirm that an instrument is operating within established performance specifications for wavelength accuracy, absorbance accuracy, and stray light performance.  The MICROSOLV UV-Visible Calibration Kit™ contains multiple reference materials that support qualification activities across the UV and visible wavelength ranges commonly used in laboratory testing.


Spectral Range Covered by the Kit

The UV-Visible Calibration Kit™ is designed for use within the: 

  • Ultraviolet (UV) Region - 200-400 nm
  • ​Visible Region - 400-780 nm

These wavelength ranges encompass most routine UV-Visible analytical applications used in pharmaceutical, environmental, research, and quality control laboratories.


Standards Included in the Kit

The calibration kit contains reference materials used to evaluate several critical instrument performance parameters.

Potassium Dichromate

Used for:  Absorbance accuracy verification.  Photometric performance assessment.  Potassium dichromate is widely recognized as a standard material for evaluating absorbance accuracy in UV-Visible spectrophotometers.

Holmium Oxide

Used for:  Wavelength accuracy verification.  Holmium oxide produces multiple well-defined absorbance peaks across the UV and visible spectrum, making it a commonly used wavelength calibration standard.

Potassium Iodide

Used for:  Stray light assessment.  Stray light measurements help verify that the instrument maintains adequate optical performance at specified wavelengths.


USP <857> Considerations

The standards included in the UV-Visible Calibration Kit™ are suitable for supporting qualification procedures referenced in:  USP <857> Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy.  However, qualification can only be performed within the wavelength ranges supported by the included standards.  Users should ensure that the intended qualification procedure falls within the operating range of the supplied materials.


Near-Infrared (NIR) Measurements

The calibration kit is not intended for:  Near-Infrared (NIR) Calibration.  NIR instruments typically operate in wavelength ranges extending beyond the visible spectrum, commonly beginning near:  780 nm  and extending to significantly longer wavelengths depending on instrument design.  Because NIR qualification requires different standards and procedures, those materials are not included in this kit.
