Overview
AQ™ brand Nylon Syringe Filters are designed for HPLC sample preparation and general laboratory filtration, but they are not intended for sterile filtration applications.
Their primary role is to remove particulates from samples prior to analytical injection—not to guarantee sterility of biological or microbiological solutions.
Primary Function of 0.2 µm Nylon Syringe Filters
The core purpose of a 0.2 µm AQ™ Nylon Syringe Filter is:
- To remove particulate matter from samples
- To protect HPLC systems, including pumps, injectors, and column frits
- To prevent clogging or damage to analytical columns
These filters support better chromatographic performance by ensuring that solid debris and undissolved material do not enter the flow path.
About “Cold Sterilization” Capabilities
Although 0.2 µm filters have been documented to remove bacteria and certain microorganisms, a process sometimes referred to as cold sterilization, this capability:
- Is secondary and not guaranteed
- Depends heavily on sample type, viscosity, and microbial load
- Is not validated for sterile filtration requirements such as pharmaceutical‑grade sterility, aseptic processing, or regulated environments
Therefore, AQ™ Nylon Syringe Filters should not be considered sterile filters and should not be relied upon when true sterility is required.
Use Cases Where Sterile Filtration Is NOT Recommended
These filters should not be used for:
- Preparing sterile biological solutions
- Tissue culture media sterilization
- Microbiological reagent preparation
- Any workflow requiring validated sterility assurance
For these applications, certified sterile membrane filters or autoclavable sterile filtration devices are required.
