Bottom‑draw mobile‑phase inlet filters are designed to maximize solvent utilization from mobile‑phase reservoirs while providing continuous particulate filtration at the solvent source. These filters attach to solvent pickup tubing and draw liquid from the lowest point of the bottle, helping reduce solvent waste and support consistent chromatography operation.

This category includes bottom‑draw inlet filters manufactured under the ARE‑Applied Research™ brand, designed and produced with close control over materials and geometry to support HPLC, UHPLC, and LC‑MS workflows.

Purpose & Operating Principle

Conventional solvent pickup filters may leave usable solvent behind as liquid levels drop. Bottom‑draw inlet filters use a low‑profile, bottom‑oriented geometry that allows pickup of mobile phase down to the base of the container, helping laboratories:

  • Reduce solvent waste

  • Extend run time without bottle changes

  • Maintain stable solvent delivery as reservoirs empty

These filters function as the first filtration point in the chromatography system, preventing particulates from entering pumps, valves, and columns.

Design & Configuration Options

Bottom‑draw inlet filters in this category are available with multiple connection styles to support different laboratory setups:

  • Finger‑tight pickup filters compatible with 1/16″ or 1/8″ tubing

  • Tripod‑style connectors that accommodate multiple tubing diameters over a PEEK adapter

  • Configurations suitable for gravity‑fed filtration, positive pressure, or vacuum applications (filtration only)

Connector styles are designed to be flange‑free, using ETFE ferrules where applicable for chemical compatibility and ease of use.

Materials & Filtration Media

Available inlet filter materials include:

  • Passivated sintered stainless steel, offering durability and broad solvent compatibility

  • PTFE filtration elements, providing higher chemical inertness and visual indication of particulate buildup due to their white color

Visual monitoring of contamination buildup helps determine when cleaning or replacement is required.

Performance Benefits

  • Maximum utilization of mobile‑phase solvents

  • Continuous particulate protection at the reservoir

  • Reduced pump and valve wear

  • Improved operational efficiency and reduced downtime

  • Enhanced consistency in chromatographic performance

Bottom‑draw inlet filters complement inline and membrane filtration by addressing particulate entry before solvent reaches the pump.

Terminology Note

These filters are sometimes referred to informally as “last‑drop” inlet filters to describe their solvent‑saving design. In this category, the term bottom‑draw inlet filter is used to accurately describe functionality without reliance on proprietary naming.
