Gas Bubbling When Opening a New Cogent TYPE-C™ Column—What Does It Mean?
Occasionally, you may notice gas or liquid bubbling when removing the end plugs from a brand-new Cogent TYPE-C™ column. This is harmless and does not indicate any damage to the column.
The bubbling is caused by residual solvents or reagents used during the chemical synthesis of the stationary phase or the column packing process. These substances can become trapped in the fine pores of the silica and may be released over time, especially after shipping.
To ensure optimal performance, simply follow the recommended column conditioning procedure. This will effectively flush out any residual solvents or gases and will not impact column life or chromatographic performance.
