Totally Inorganic | Does Not Adsorb Water | Analytical & Preparative HPLC
Cogent Silica‑C™ HPLC columns are built on TYPE‑C™ silica hydride technology, making them fundamentally different from conventional silica columns. These columns feature a totally inorganic silica‑hydride surface that is completely free of carbon, delivering unmatched stability, fast equilibration, and highly reproducible performance in normal‑phase (NP) and aqueous normal phase / HILIC (ANP / HILIC) chromatography.
Silica‑C™ columns are widely used in both analytical and preparative HPLC when precise, moisture‑independent separations are required.
What Makes Silica‑C™ Unique?
Cogent Silica‑C™ columns are manufactured with a silica‑hydride (Si–H) surface, rather than traditional silanol‑based silica. As a result:
Less than 2% residual silanols remain on the surface
The surface is hydrophobic, not hydrophilic
The column does not strongly adsorb water or solvents
No “hydration shell” forms on the surface
This eliminates many of the variability and reproducibility issues associated with ordinary silica columns.
No Water Adsorption = No Moisture Management
One of the most important advantages of Cogent Silica‑C™ is that it does not require control of mobile‑phase moisture content. Unlike conventional silica, which is highly sensitive to trace water levels, the silica‑hydride surface interacts weakly with water.
Key benefits include:
Consistent retention without drying solvents
Improved run‑to‑run reproducibility
Simplified method setup
Greater robustness in routine use
This makes Silica‑C™ especially attractive for laboratories running normal‑phase HPLC without the complexity of solvent conditioning.
Normal‑Phase and Aqueous Normal‑Phase (ANP / HILIC) in One Column
Cogent Silica‑C™ columns are highly versatile and can be used in multiple modes:
Normal‑Phase (NP) HPLC
For less polar compounds, Silica‑C™ performs exceptionally well in traditional NP separations using non‑polar mobile phases—without concerns about solvent moisture.
Aqueous Normal Phase / HILIC (ANP / HILIC)
The same column can be used in ANP / HILIC‑style mode with acetonitrile and water, enabling retention of moderately polar compounds with excellent reproducibility.
Fast equilibration between runs allows for higher throughput compared to ordinary silica columns.
Ideal for Analytical and Preparative HPLC
Because of its exceptional surface stability and reproducibility, Cogent Silica‑C™ is suitable for:
Analytical HPLC
Preparative HPLC
Method development
Routine production workflows
The inorganic, carbon‑free surface contributes to long column life and consistent performance over time.

Column Protection Recommendation
Important: MICROSOLV technical support strongly recommends using the Cogent Column Filter, which is included with each column, whenever possible. Column filters help protect against particulates, extend column lifetime, and maintain consistent chromatographic performance.
